Course Overview

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is named after Oliver McGowan, a young man with autism and learning disability who died unnecessarily. His story, along with that of his mother, led to new legislation requiring all health and social care staff to receive training on learning disability and autism.

Tier 1 is Part 2 of the training and is designed for health and social care staff who need a general awareness of learning disability and autism. It is a 1-hour live webinar that introduces the concepts of learning disability and autism, highlighting the importance of understanding these conditions to provide better care and support.

Part 1 comes first. All learners must complete Part 1 (eLearning through the E-learning for Healthcare portal) before attending the Tier 1 webinar.

Tier 1 is not itself mandatory. The statutory requirement is that health and social care staff undertake training in learning disability and autism that is relevant to their role and meets a specific criterion. This course is currently not accredited.

Reimbursement available: Training on learning disability and autism can be claimed from the Learning and Development Support Scheme. This means your training may be partially or fully funded. Read our detailed guide on OMMT reimbursement eligibility.

All our trainers are qualified by the NHS and Yorkshire Futures is an approved provider. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is a national delivery model.
