October 2026 · 2 min read

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 set out a simple hierarchy: avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess the risk of any that cannot be avoided, and reduce the risk of injury as far as is reasonably practicable.

Practical tips

  • Plan the lift and the route before you start.
  • Use a trolley, hoist or other equipment where you can.
  • Keep the load close to the body and keep a stable stance.
  • Get help for loads that are too heavy or awkward for one person.

Training that gets used

Practical, hands-on manual handling training helps people spot risks in their own work and practise safer techniques, including controlled team lifts.
